Character Info
Name
: August
Age: Nineteen
Gender: Male
Birthplace: Dragon’s Head Hold
Personality: Typically August tends to come across as a typical person you’d expect to see in a Hall, seen practicing his flute and writing down his music as he goes. Usually seen deep in thought or merely fiddling around with whatever new concoction he has come up with this time, being a rather artistic type of person. This doesn’t mean he’s a pushover, which he really isn’t. Despite a calm and kind demeanor he tends to hold himself in such a manner that would befit someone of higher rank than himself. Body posture tending to be big and bold while his voice remains light and full of various metaphors and similes, something that contradicts itself no matter what way it’s looked at.

At his core, however, August is the type of person that would do whatever he could to help someone out, whether or not he knows the person personally. In fact, that’s probably his biggest flaw, his giant heart and eagerness to make people happy and peaceful. This is the reason why he became a harper apprentice to begin with, thinking he was doing the whole planet a service by memorizing the ballads of their history and crafting new ones to be remembered years and lifetimes down the road. It doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a drive to be a leader if given half the chance, though he’s the type to lead through compassion and understanding than to be one of control and domineering personality.

While he may, to some, appear fearless, he is anything but. In fact, there’s quite a lot that bothers and gets under the teen’s skin. He just tends to not show that sort of emotion if it isn’t an appropriate time and place for it. This, unfortunately for him, showed rather obviously once he was searched, clinging onto the rider that found him and being a bit skittish around the dragons at first. Such larger creatures he’d only seen in tapestries and heard of in tales, not something he ever thought he’d have the opportunity to see. While he does respect the dragons and the riders of them, he still finds himself wary of the whole thing. Unsure of whether or not he’s an actual good idea for being a candidate or not.
History: August’s history is rather plain and boring for the most part, having been born in Dragon’s Head Hall and being raised as a typical boy would have. He worked just as hard as he was meant to and was very much dedicated to his duties, he would not leave something half-down. However what showed, interestingly to most, was his take on how to make friends and how to interact around others his age. At a young age he took to compassion and understanding of his peers, always the one to be the mediator in a situation but never the instigator unless something of grave unjust was being committed to himself or someone around him. He very quickly became known as the person to go to if there was a problem with his peers, tending to solve it through quick wit and word than through brute force.

What also came to him at a young age was his quick interest in the harpers. He was always one to remember and catch onto the old tales and ballads, reciting them almost word perfect from the very beginning. He also came to an admiration of harpers that particularly used the flute, finding it a difficult and elegant instrument that would have a very particular purpose. One much different from the other instruments and certainly one with quite a lot of potential.
Once he came of age he was quick to join the harper hall, taking the position of apprentice beneath a particularly talented flutist. August was quick to take to his studies and practices, never seen without his beloved instrument and something to write with and on in case he came across a way to improve a piece or create a new one altogether. It was what he had called his calling, the place he was meant to be and would prosper and flourish as one of the most important harpers out there.

This all changed once the dragonmen came, searching for candidates for the next coming hatching. Despite his initial protests to the whole ordeal and insisting that his future lay with the harpers, he eventually gave in to be taken to become a candidate. After all, he could become one of whom tales were told of, those that would be honored in tradition and throughout all time. The prospect of this overrode protest and fear, leaving him with excitement and nervousness.
Attitude towards Search/Impression: August has a few different fealins on having been Searched, one from the time of and then his feelings towards it afterward. In the beginning, with his promising (or so it was in his mind) budding interest and talent towards being a harper he detested the idea, not wanting to be stripped away from his glorious future. Therefore he was stubborn and very much annoyed with the whole bit, insisting that him being Searched was a mistake. Though having been explained the situation he now finds it something more than himself, something for the good of the world. This good would very much bring him into the ranks of those told about in tales and made in tapestries, thus bringing him into a feeling of fear and nervousness, but excitement still lingering within him.

How dare they, how DARE they try and take him away from the harpers, away from his career he knew would be well known, well known as one of the best harpers around. One that they would tell tales about, one that they would remember for generations, how dare they try and remove that from him. It made August seethe as the rider went through the prattle of his purpose being Searched and a matter of other things that made August all the more upset about the whole ordeal. He was like a budding flower, to be beautiful once he was at his full height, to be remembered even if it might end up being fleeting.

No, no he was not meant to become one of these dragonmen, he belonged here within the Hall and to be taught the ways of the flute and the tales and ballads to be recited to future generations. He was one of the most prosperous of the harper apprentices of this place and he knew it well, or so his conceit would lead him to believe.
Lips a thin line he blankly stared at the green rider that was still speaking to him, nothing but contempt within his mind and nothing getting through his ears to that brain of his, inflated by ego. It wasn’t until he said the magic words of being known throughout the land did he stop his seething and truly listen into what was being told.

“Known? For what exactly?”

“That would be up to you, depending on if you Impress and on what you do with that power.”

Power, knowledge, fame. It was all enough to get him giddy with envy. He would be known as something more than a harper, he’d be upon a regal beast and protect Pern from the menace of Thread as well as anything else that may have popped up. It was exciting and enduring, maybe he shouldn’t be so uppity about this, after all, it wouldn’t be becoming to someone upon a dragon, would it?

A dragon.

The creatures were magnificent and awe inspiring, creatures that were far more powerful than any one man or hundreds of them could ever be. Eyes widening in thought of the creatures also brought a small shiver up his spine and a sick feeling to his stomach. He’d be known, sure, but he was always going to be scrutinized and every little mess up could mean the end for him.
